SPOTTERS’ NETWORK
WBZ-TV (Channel 4) in Boston has owed its compelling coverage of the Boston Marathon to many factors, not least of all the Spotters’ Network – student volunteers positioned along the Marathon course who provide real-time statistics to be delivered by the on-air talent. Launched in 1985, the program today relies on scores of students, primarily from high schools along the race route, to round out the rich reporting and details that WBZ’s cameras often can’t see.
For the 2022 Boston Marathon, 53 students from 11 area high schools were assigned to each mile of the Marathon route and to the finish line, while another 17 worked in the WBZ studios in Brighton, MA.
The 26.2 Foundation is proud to support the Spotters in their work.
The Spotters are our eyes on the course. They give us information that makes it possible for us to tell these great stories here at the finish line.
